Fribourg cantonal police are investigating a “man-made” and potentially intentional act after a bus fire in Kerzers killed at least six people and injured five others on Tuesday evening.

Authorities confirmed that the blaze, which broke out on a busy main street near Bern, is being treated as a deliberate incident rather than a mechanical failure or accident.

While a criminal investigation is underway, officials have not yet identified a specific motive for the tragedy.

The vehicle involved was a PostBus, a staple of Swiss rural transport, which was completely gutted by flames within minutes.

Witnesses reported seeing passengers desperately escaping the inferno before emergency crews and a rescue helicopter arrived.

Three of the injured remain in serious condition, and police have established a security perimeter and a witness hotline to assist in the ongoing probe.

The incident has deeply unsettled the nation, marking the second mass-casualty fire in Switzerland this year following the Crans-Montana disaster in January.

President Guy Parmelin expressed his profound sadness over the loss of life, while PostBus officials announced that psychological support would be made available to employees.

Investigators are expected to spend several days analysing the wreckage for clues regarding how the fire was started.
