The Swiss government confirmed Friday that an Ebola patient in Nigeria did not visit the Democratic Republic of Congo, directly contradicting reports from Ugandan officials.

The patient, a Ugandan-born woman married to a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, tested positive in Nigeria’s first recorded Ebola case in over a decade.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs initially reported Thursday that the woman likely contracted the virus during a trip to Uganda with her husband, but clarification on Friday firmly ruled out any travel to the DRC.

Ugandan authorities previously claimed the woman contracted the virus while travelling in eastern Congo, where the current outbreak began in mid-May and quickly grew into the fastest-spreading on record.

However, both the World Health Organisation and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention stated they lacked evidence confirming any Congo visit.

“She and her husband did not travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the Swiss foreign department reiterated in its statement.

Uganda previously reported 20 Ebola cases in May and June—mostly imported from Congo—before the WHO declared the nation Ebola-free in August.

Government spokesperson Alan Kasujja reasserted that Uganda currently has no active Ebola cases and remains committed to public transparency.

The confirmed case in Nigeria expands the regional footprint of the outbreak across four African nations—Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria—where Africa CDC data confirms the virus has already claimed roughly 4,700 lives.
