Swiss pilot Raphael Domjan has set a new altitude record for a solar-powered electric plane, reaching 9,521 metres (31,237 feet) in his SolarStratos aircraft.
The five-hour flight, which took off from Sion Airport in Switzerland, surpassed the previous record of 9,235 metres set 15 years ago.
The data from the flight will now be submitted to the World Air Sports Federation for official validation. This achievement marks a significant step toward Domjan’s ultimate goal of flying a solar-powered plane into the stratosphere, an altitude that begins around 12,000 metres.
The project’s broader mission is to promote solar energy and raise awareness for environmental protection.
