Taiwan has announced plans to deepen its military cooperation with the United States in a bid to bolster its defensive capabilities amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
The move underscores Taipei’s determination to strengthen security ties with Washington as it faces increasing military pressure from Beijing.
Taiwan’s Defence Minister, Wellington Koo, disclosed the new strategic direction during a policy briefing in Taipei, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing national resilience through modernisation and international partnerships.
He explained that the upgraded collaboration would focus on advanced training programmes, intelligence sharing, and the acquisition of modern defence technology.
“Our goal is to ensure Taiwan’s defence readiness through stronger partnerships and continued investment in our security,” Koo said. “We value the support of the United States and other democratic allies in preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
The announcement follows a series of recent military exercises conducted by China near Taiwan’s air and maritime boundaries, which Taipei has repeatedly condemned as acts of intimidation.
The United States, while maintaining its “One China” policy, has continued to provide defensive support to Taiwan through arms sales and military exchanges under the Taiwan Relations Act.
Defence analysts believe the planned collaboration will likely include joint training initiatives and increased military advisory roles, enabling Taiwan’s forces to adapt to evolving regional threats.
The US Department of Defence has not yet released details on the scope of the expanded partnership, but officials have reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to helping Taiwan maintain a credible self-defence capability.
Observers say the move could heighten diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing, which has warned against any form of official or military engagement with Taiwan.
However, Taipei insists that closer cooperation with allies remains crucial to safeguarding its sovereignty and democratic values.
