Tanzania Opens CHAN 2024 with 2-0 Win

Tanzania head coach Hemed Suleiman Ali expressed joy after his team secured a strong 2-0 victory against Burkina Faso in their opening match of the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday.

A first-half penalty from Abdul Hamisi Suleiman, followed by a second-half finish from Mohamed Hussein Mohamed, ensured a perfect start for the Taifa Stars in front of their home crowd. “I’m pleased we scored two goals and kept a clean sheet. This is a good foundation to build on,” Suleiman said after the match.

However, the coach also noted a need for improvement in front of goal. “While we scored twice, we should have had more. We must work on our finishing before the next game.”

The match began with intense action, both teams creating chances early on. Tanzania’s Clement Mzize and Feisal Salum tested Burkina Faso goalkeeper Ladji Sanou, while Souleymane Sangaré and Papus Ouattara missed opportunities for the visitors.

The opening game was attended by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, along with several Member Association Presidents.

Tanzania will next face Mauritania on August 4th. Meanwhile, Madagascar will meet Mauritania on Sunday in the second Group C match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
