Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony, hailed Kefas’s move, stating that Kefas’s decision to join the party was timely and aligned with the APC’s foundational principles.
He praised Kefas’ understanding of Taraba’s ethnic and religious diversity and urged residents to support him in advancing development.
“The APC was built as a meeting point for people committed to development. Today, it is a thing of pride that Taraba has joined this fold. We welcome our brother home because, in truth, he has always been with us,” the Vice President said.
The Vice President also described Kefas as the “undisputed leader of the APC in the state” and lauded his dedication to inclusive governance and developmental projects.
National APC Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwada also stated that Kefas’s defection would boost both the party and Taraba State, noting that the alignment would help create the state’s economic and developmental potential.
He called on the governor to unite party stakeholders while assuring all members of fairness and inclusiveness.
Governor Kefas, in his remarks, thanked the APC leadership and the Nigerian government, emphasising that his defection was motivated by the best interests of Taraba State rather than personal ambition.
He stated that he was determined to work together to redefine the future for Taraba State.
The governor also commended President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a results-oriented leader, and called for Taraba State to be opened to development and investment.
