Tensions surrounding Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid have flared up again, reigniting debate among supporters despite a comfortable victory over Sevilla on Saturday night that was overshadowed by Kylian Mbappé’s record-setting display.

The Brazilian forward found himself at the centre of controversy after being booed by sections of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd when Carlo Ancelotti substituted him late in the game.

Shortly afterwards, Vinicius changed his social media profile picture to an image of himself wearing a Brazil national team shirt, a move that many fans viewed as a deliberate provocation rather than an innocent gesture.

Criticism has intensified since then.

Vinicius departed for Dubai as frustration among supporters continued to grow, with signs that the relationship between player and fanbase is becoming increasingly strained.

A poll reported by Marca suggests that 86 per cent of Madrid supporters now believe the club should consider selling him, with many feeling the bond has been damaged beyond repair.

Irritation had already been building following his reaction on the bench during the Copa del Rey match against Talavera, and recent events have only hardened opinions.

Inside the club, however, the tone is markedly different.

Real Madrid’s hierarchy remains firmly behind Vinicius and is keen to finalise a contract extension before the end of the season to avoid him entering the final year of his current deal.

This position places the club at odds with Xabi Alonso, whose relationship with the former Flamengo winger is reportedly strained, as well as with a vocal section of the fanbase.

Within the dressing room, Vinicius still enjoys strong backing. Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Endrick all publicly showed their support on social media, underlining his standing among his teammates.

That show of unity comes even as Vinicius’ goal drought stretches to 14 matches and speculation over his long-term future at the club continues to intensify.
