Debutants Kenya edged closer to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Morocco on Sunday.

The victory placed Kenya at the top of Group B with seven points, alongside Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia.

Despite playing with only 10 men, Kenya outperformed the North African team, who had come into the match with an impressive unbeaten streak of 14 games.

Fueled by a full-capacity crowd at the Kasarani stadium, the Harambee Stars managed to keep Morocco pinned in their half from the very beginning.

Morocco’s Ayoub Mouloua had to exit the match due to an elbow injury sustained in the 21st minute. Bouchaib Arrassi received the first yellow card from the referee for a rough tackle on Ryan Ogam as the midfield struggle intensified.

Ogam, who plays for Tusker in the Kenyan league, netted the decisive goal in the 42nd minute, scoring from a rebound that found its way into the net.

The only downside for the winners occurred when Chrispine Erambo was dismissed for a reckless tackle on Moroccan forward Anas El Mahraoui just before halftime.

Erambo became the second Kenyan player to receive a red card in the tournament after his teammate Marvin Nabwire was sent off in the previous match against Angola.

In other news, co-hosts Tanzania became the first team to secure their spot in the quarter-finals on Saturday after narrowly defeating Madagascar 2-1 at the Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The home team took control of the Group B match, with Clement Mzize scoring twice within the first 20 minutes. Mika Razafimahatana managed to pull one back for Madagascar in the 34th minute.

Tanzania finished on top of the group with a perfect nine points and will compete against the Group A runners-up in the quarter-finals at home on August 22.

Mauritania climbed to second place after defeating the Central African Republic 1-0.

A goal by Ahmed El Moctar in the ninth minute secured the match for Mauritania and ended their goal drought in the tournament.
