At least 15 soldiers were killed and five others wounded in an attack on a military camp in northern Benin on Wednesday, the army said on Friday, as terrorism spreads across parts of West Africa.
The assault, claimed by a group linked to al-Qaeda, occurred in the village of Kofouno near the borders with Niger and Nigeria, a region that has seen a rise in militant activity along remote transit corridors.
“The attack resulted in the loss of 15 of our personnel and five wounded,” said Colonel James Johnson, a spokesperson for the Benin Armed Forces.

Johnson added that the army killed at least four of the attackers and destroyed several motorcycles used by the militants during their retreat.
54 soldiers were killed by militants in a similar attack in the north of the country in April of last year. The threat of armed extremist groups operating in Nigeria, Niger, and Benin’s borderlands is growing.
