A fragile 10-day ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia was jeopardised on Tuesday after mortar fire from Cambodian forces wounded a Thai soldier in Ubon Ratchathani province.
Bangkok accused its neighbour of violating the December 27 truce, which had ended weeks of deadly conflict.
The Thai military reported that Cambodian officials later reached out to characterise the strike as an “operational error” rather than a deliberate attack.
Despite this explanation, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul lodged a formal protest, seeking further clarification and accountability for the incident.

While Thailand warned of potential retaliation if further “accidents” occur, both nations are attempting to manage the long-standing border demarcation dispute.
Hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians had only recently begun returning to the area.
Cambodia has proposed a bilateral meeting in Siem Reap to discuss the border later this month, though Thailand suggests such negotiations may wait until after its February elections.
