Avatar: Fire and Ash” has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, maintaining its dominance in North American cinemas with an additional $40 million in weekend ticket sales, according to industry estimates released on Sunday.

Data from Exhibitor Relations showed that the third instalment in James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise has now grossed $306 million in the United States and Canada, alongside $777 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide total to $1.08 billion. 

The film stars Zoe Saldana as Na’vi warrior Neytiri and Sam Worthington as former Marine Jake Sully, as the pair confront a new threat endangering their family on the alien world of Pandora.

“Fire and Ash” becomes the fourth Cameron-directed film to surpass the $1 billion milestone, following the first two “Avatar” movies and “Titanic.”

Disney’s animated sequel “Zootopia 2” secured second place in North America with $19 million, pushing its global earnings to nearly $1.6 billion.

Lionsgate’s “The Housemaid,” adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, placed third with $14.9 million. The film stars Sydney Sweeney as a young woman employed by a wealthy couple, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, who conceal dark secrets.

A24’s period sports drama “Marty Supreme,” featuring Timothée Chalamet, followed in fourth place with $12.6 million, while “Anaconda,” a meta action-comedy starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black, rounded out the top five with $10 million.

Completing the top 10 at the North American box office were:

  • The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants ($8.2 million)
  • David ($8 million)
  • Song Sung Blue ($5.8 million)
  • Wicked: For Good ($3.3 million)
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 ($2.7 million)
