Thousands of protesters have gathered outside the United States (US) embassy in Havana to show support for former Cuban president Raúl Castro following his indictment in the United States.
According to AFP, the rally took place on Friday at a park near the US embassy known as the “Anti-Imperialist Platform,” with demonstrators waving Cuban flags and chanting: “Long live Raul!”
Cuba’s current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and several top government officials attended the gathering wearing military-style clothing.

On Wednesday, Raúl Castro was charged by US authorities over the 1996 shooting down of two civilian aircraft. The indictment is seen as part of President Donald Trump’s renewed pressure campaign against Cuba’s communist leadership. Although Castro did not attend the rally, members of his family were present, including his daughter, Mariela Castro, and his son, Alejandro Castro.
During the rally, Former Cuban spy Gerardo Hernandez addressed the crowd and delivered a message from Castro. He said, “He thanks our people from the bottom of his heart for their solidarity,” Hernandez told supporters.
Hernandez also said that Castro said, “As long as he lives, he will continue to lead our people and defend our revolution.”
