The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended three doctors over the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Ndamdi Esege, the son of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The suspended medical doctors include the medical director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Tunde Majekodunmi; the hospital’s anaesthesiologist, who is on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) list; and the Chief Medical Officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Atinuke Uwajeh.
The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigations Panel, the MDCN organ responsible for investigating allegations of medical negligence, ruled that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the allegations against the three doctors.

The Body’s secretary, Enejo Abdu, in a statement, revealed that 10 other doctors will face further investigation over allegations of professional misconduct. The ten doctors are Adeseye Akinsete, Chidinma Ohagwu, Anthony Ajeh, Amarachi Bayo, Nkechi Peji, Olaoye Oludare, Agaja Oyinkansola, Patricia Akintan, Babatunde Bamgboye, and Raji Faidat.
Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twin sons, died on January 7, 2026, in Lagos. The family said Nkanu became ill and was taken to private hospitals in Lagos for diagnostic procedures, including an MRI and other tests, ahead of a planned medical transfer to the United States for further care.
Adichie and her husband have alleged medical negligence in the care he received, including issues with sedation and monitoring during procedures, and have requested that the hospital release all medical records related to his treatment.
