Three Kenyan soldiers lost their lives and several others were injured on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated under their vehicle in Lamu County’s eastern region, close to the Somali border, according to the army.
The soldiers were conducting a patrol on the road linking Kiunga and Sankuri when their vehicle encountered the IED.
“Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries,” the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) said.
The statement indicated that the injured personnel were transported to specialised military medical facilities and were “responding well to treatment,” though no further details were given. Local news outlets reported that seven individuals sustained injuries.
The statement also noted that “multi-agency security teams” have initiated investigations. This region has experienced numerous attacks orchestrated by the Al-Shabaab militant group.

In 2018, five soldiers died and six others were injured in an assault later claimed by the group, which operates in parts of Somalia beyond governmental authority.
The Al-Qaeda-affiliated group has previously asserted responsibility for attacks resulting in the deaths of many Kenyan police officers and soldiers.
For over a decade, the group has been engaged in efforts to topple the government in Mogadishu, and a recent rise in assaults in Somalia has raised alarms over a potential resurgence of jihadist activities following a period of setbacks for these militants.
