President Bola Tinubu on Monday met with Nigeria’s service chiefs behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Although the purpose of the meeting was not officially disclosed, it is believed to relate to the nation’s security framework.

Those present included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kelvin Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye; and Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu.

Announcing the meeting on X, Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, wrote: “New Service Chiefs in the State House for a crucial meeting with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR — Chief of Defence Staff: Lieutenant General O.O. Oluyede; Chief of Defence Intelligence: Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye; Chief of Army Staff: Major General W. Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff: Rear Admiral I. The meeting followed Tinubu’s recent shake-up of the military hierarchy, in which he replaced General Christopher Musa with General Olufemi Oluyede — formerly Chief of Army Staff — as Chief of Defence Staff. Major General Undiendeye was retained as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

While the presidency described the reshuffle as part of the Nigerian government’s efforts to strengthen national security, critics have linked the move to an alleged coup attempt.

In a statement, the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) urged Tinubu to clarify the reasons for the changes, stating, “The Nigerian government owes Nigerians a clear explanation of what truly transpired.” Our concern remains the stability of our country and our democracy, especially in light of recent developments in Chad and the Sahel region.”
