President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound condolences to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband Dr. Ivara Esege, and their family over the death of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
In a statement released by the Statehouse, the president described the loss of a child as one of the most devastating experiences a parent can endure. He empathised with the family, saying he mourns the loss with them.
“With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
“As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child. I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them. “

President Tinubu also paid tribute to Mrs. Adichie’s literary contributions, noting that she has brought joy and light to many homes globally.
“Mrs Adichie is a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally, and I pray she and her family find strength in the Almighty in this trying hour. My prayers are with the family.”
The 21-month-old died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following a brief illness, the family confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by Omawumi Ogbe on their behalf.
The statement described the family as “devastated by this profound loss” and requested privacy during this difficult time. It also asked the public and the media for prayers and understanding, noting that no further statements would be made.
