Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has denied allegations that he is seeking to turn Nigeria from a multi-party state to a one-party state.
These claims gained prominence when members of opposition parties, including Nigeria’s former ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), began defecting to the ruling party, the APC. 31 of the country’s 36 governors are members of the APC.
But Tinubu, who spoke at the APC 2026 National Convention on Firday affirmed his belief in a credible opposition, saying democracy thrives on healthy competition and constructive engagement among political actors.
“Let me reiterate, we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition that can challenge, question and help refine policies,” said Tinubu.

The APC, which was formed as a coalition in 2013 to unseat former President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, has become a formidable force while an internal crisis is rocking the PDP. APC members discussed strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections and drummed up support for Tinubu.
According to Tinubu, the APC was founded as a platform for national transformation, not just a vehicle for political ambition and electoral victories.
“We must also remind ourselves that this party is not merely a vehicle specially built to carry ambitious politicians to electoral victories. It was founded as a vehicle for national transformation, a home for anybody who wants to build a Nigeria where governance works, institutions function, and opportunities abound for all citizens,” he said
Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment in the party’s history, offering an opportunity to renew commitment to its founding ideals and national objectives.
The President also urged party members to remain disciplined, stressing that internal cohesion was critical to sustaining political success and national relevance.
He called on delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders to conduct themselves with integrity and respect throughout the convention proceedings.
