Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has promised Nigerians that his administration would improve Nigeria’s poor power supply, which is crippling businesses, affecting productivity and leaving Nigerians groaning.
Recently, the demand for improved electricity has intensified, particularly as the cost of petrol, commonly used to run generators as an alternative, has risen, and temperatures continue to rise, worsening the heat.
Nigeria generates approximately 45,000 to 50,000 megawatts of electricity daily, yet only about 5,000 megawatts, which is roughly 10 per cent, reaches the national grid. The situation has, however, worsened in recent months. As of 25th March 2026, just 2,908 megawatts were allocated to the country’s electricity distribution companies.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) warned that poor electricity supply costs Nigeria an estimated N40 trillion every year. Many Nigerians have called out the Tinubu-led administration and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to improve power supply.
While addressing members of the ruling All Progressives Congress at the party’s 2026 National Convention on Friday, Tinubu told Nigerians that his administration is paying attention to the plight of Nigerians who have lamented the poor power supply and assured them that electricity will improve.
” I assure you, many of you lamenting the problems of electricity and power. Yes, we are paying attention to that. The grid asset management company, Camco, which will inject approximately 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor,” said Tinubu.
“We are going to improve on it. Electricity will become better, and I am assured there will be opportunity and progress in our industrialisation path. Tonight, you heard testimony from beneficiaries of our programmes. Our programmes are real, feasible, viable, impactful, measurable, and not mere rhetoric as some opposition elements like to say. We are moving from survival mode to stability.”
