Lucas Bergvall’s late goal handed Tottenham a controversial 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday. The 18-year-old’s strike, which came with just four minutes remaining, sparked frustration from Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who felt Bergvall should have been sent off earlier for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas.
Despite the drama surrounding Bergvall’s eligibility to remain on the pitch, Tottenham celebrated their hard-earned win, which was marred by an injury scare for Rodrigo Bentancur.
The midfielder was stretchered off early after a concerning head injury, but Tottenham reassured fans that he was conscious and would be hospitalised for further checks.
Liverpool’s defeat ended an impressive 24-match unbeaten streak, and they will now need to recover in the second leg at Anfield on February 6.
