Troops of the Joint Task Force, North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, have repelled an attack by terrorists linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province(ISWAP) on a military base in Goniri, Yobe State

The incident was confirmed on Monday in a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Sani Uba.

According to him, the terrorists launched the assault late Sunday night, continuing into the early hours of Monday, in what appeared to be a coordinated attempt to overpower the troops.

Uba explained that the attackers advanced on the base from multiple directions between about 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., but the troops resisted the offensive and mounted a coordinated defence.

“The attacks occurred during the night of March 8–9, 2026, between 2200 hours and 0300 hours. The terrorists launched simultaneous assaults from several directions in an apparent attempt to overwhelm troop positions,” he said.

He said soldiers on the ground worked alongside reinforcements and received crucial support from the air component of Operation HADIN KAI during the battle.

“Fighting across multiple fronts, the troops effectively coordinated their defensive actions, while reinforcements and the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided timely and decisive support during the engagements,” Uba added.

The military spokesperson said the terrorists eventually withdrew after sustaining heavy losses, leaving several of their fighters dead on the battlefield.

He added that despite the successful defence, parts of the base’s defensive perimeter were breached during the intense fighting.

Some buildings and vehicles within the military facility were also damaged as a result of the clashes, he said.

Uba noted that troops nonetheless retained control of the base and have since launched follow-up operations in the surrounding areas with support from the air component.

He further confirmed that the confrontation resulted in casualties among the soldiers.
