During a meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, US President Donald Trump assured attendees that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not be allowed to annex the occupied West Bank, according to Politico.
Sources familiar with the discussions said Trump presented a white paper outlining his administration’s proposals to end Israel’s nearly two-year war on Gaza, addressing governance and post-war security. Despite the pledge, the sources noted that a ceasefire remains elusive.
Trump described the meeting with leaders from Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, the UAE, and Jordan as his “most important” session of the day, calling it “very successful with all of the big players, except for Israel.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the talks as “very productive and positive.
The West Bank has seen escalating violence, with Israeli forces and illegal settlers killing over 1,042 Palestinians and injuring more than 7,000 since October 2023, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal in July 2024 and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Israel continues to expand settlements, effectively fragmenting Palestinian territory, while assaults and intimidation by settlers persist, often with the acquiescence of Israeli authorities.
