U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a temporary three-day ceasefire in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to run from May 9 to May 11.
The pause in hostilities is intended to commemorate the end of World War II, a significant historical milestone for the region.
According to a statement shared on social media, the agreement involves a total suspension of combat operations and a major humanitarian exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.
The announcement follows a high-level discussion between President Trump and Vladimir Putin late last month.
While previous unilateral truces have occurred, this U.S.-brokered effort aims to provide a more structured pause in the four-year invasion.
Trump expressed optimism that this temporary halt could serve as a precursor to a permanent resolution, noting that negotiations to end the “deadly and hard-fought” war are seeing continued progress.
Despite the temporary truce, significant diplomatic hurdles remain as peace talks have recently stalled in Miami.

The primary point of contention involves the Donetsk region, with Moscow demanding a Ukrainian retreat from certain areas and Kyiv refusing to relinquish any controlled territory.
Both nations have also historically accused one another of breaching previous ceasefire declarations.
The timing of the pause coincides with Russia’s own planned commemorations for Victory Day on May 9, which include the traditional military parade in Red Square.
Ukraine had previously proposed its own open-ended ceasefire earlier in the week, calling for Russian reciprocity.
This new three-day window represents a critical moment for international mediators as they attempt to break the deadlock in the broader peace process.
