Trump Cautions UK Against China Ties

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that it would be “very dangerous” for Britain to do business with China, as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer travels to Beijing for talks with Xi Jinping.

Trump made the comment while attending the premiere of a documentary about his wife, Melania. Asked about Britain’s engagement with China, he replied: “Well it’s very dangerous for them to do that.”

“It’s even more dangerous, I think, for Canada to get into business with China. Canada is not doing well. They’re doing very poorly.” Trump added.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said China is willing to strengthen cooperation with all countries in a spirit of mutual benefit and win-win results.

Starmer’s visit to China is the first by a British prime minister since 2018 and follows Western leaders’ pursuit of closer ties with Beijing.

On Thursday, Starmer met Xi and signed several cooperation agreements. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney also visited China this month and reached trade and tourism deals.

Trump responded by suggesting Canada could face 100-per-cent tariffs if Carney pursued further deals with Beijing, a threat Carney dismissed as a negotiation tactic.
