US President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, initially announced shortly after he took office, will proceed as planned, following a month-long delay for negotiations.

At a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump stated, “The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule.” These duties, up to 25 percent, were introduced with the justification of curbing illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl, and they are to resume next week, despite ongoing talks between the US and its North American neighbours to find a compromise.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed optimism about reaching a deal with the US, hinting that Mexico might be willing to impose levies on Chinese goods as part of the agreement. Additionally, Sheinbaum signalled openness to an early review of the trade agreement with the US and Canada.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly acknowledged the seriousness of the tariff threat, indicating that it could persist for some time.

During the talks, Macron urged for fair competition in trade, stressing the importance of maintaining strong economic relations between the US and Europe. He also called for more investment on both sides, highlighting the interconnection of the American and European economies.

Trump, who has emphasized reciprocity in trade, reaffirmed that the US will continue to apply tariffs on countries imposing charges against it, while Macron warned against escalating a trade war on multiple fronts, urging for a collaborative approach between the US, China, and Europe.
