Trump Criticises Allies Over Palestinian Recognition

US President Donald Trump has voiced strong disapproval of recent moves by key allies including France, the United Kingdom and Canada to recognise a Palestinian state, according to his press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The president’s objections follow a series of announcements indicating that the three countries plan to formally acknowledge Palestinian statehood at a United Nations meeting in September. The development has reportedly only reinforced Trump’s firm opposition to the idea.

While Trump reserved his sharpest criticism for Canada over its UN statement, he adopted a more restrained tone when addressing similar moves by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Dismissing Macron’s initiative—which was the first to publicly revive the statehood issue—Trump downplayed its significance, saying the French leader’s words “don’t carry much weight.”

The UK’s position has been more conditional. Prime Minister Starmer stated earlier this week that Britain would move to recognise Palestine in September unless Israel demonstrates tangible progress, including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza. Trump, speaking after talks with Starmer in Scotland, said he did not support that approach. “I’m not in that camp, to be honest,” he remarked.

Press Secretary Leavitt later emphasised that the president views the growing momentum toward recognition as misguided. “He sees it as rewarding Hamas at a time when Hamas remains the primary obstacle to a ceasefire and the release of all hostages,” she said.

The planned recognition by several close allies could mark a significant shift in international diplomacy, one which the Trump administration appears determined to resist.
