US President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday that he has agreed to suspend a planned military offensive against Iran for a period of 14 days.
The decision came just over an hour before a midnight GMT deadline that would have triggered a massive strike on Iranian infrastructure.
Following intense deliberations with Pakistani mediators, the U.S. leader signalled a willingness to enter ceasefire negotiations, provided that Tehran meets the primary condition of fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The temporary suspension offers a critical diplomatic window in a conflict that has seen global energy markets paralysed by the blockade of the strategic waterway.
The U.S. government has stopped the imminent bombing, which has opened the door for more high-level talks aimed at ending the war “once and for all.”
However, the president emphasised that the pause is contingent upon Iran’s immediate cooperation regarding the freedom of navigation for oil and gas shipments through the Persian Gulf.
