US President Donald Trump on Thursday introduced a self-branded website, “TrumpRx,” which allows Americans to purchase discounted prescription medications, including weight-loss and fertility treatments, directly from participating pharmaceutical companies.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump announced that, effective immediately, dozens of widely used prescription drugs would be offered to consumers at sharply reduced prices.
He argued that Americans have historically paid more for medications than patients in other countries, effectively subsidising lower prices in those countries.
According to the president, pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have agreed to provide significant price cuts on their GLP-1 weight-loss drugs through the platform.
He stated that Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic would drop from over $1,000 per month to $199, while Eli Lilly’s Wegovy would be reduced from $1,300 to the same price. The website indicates that the discounted rate applies for the first two months, then gradually increases.
During the launch event, officials invited a woman onstage whom they described as the first to obtain reduced-cost fertility medication through the platform.
Mehmet Oz, the television personality who now heads the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services under Trump, suggested the lower prices could lead to a surge in births.
The White House further stated that the site will initially offer savings on more than 40 commonly prescribed drugs. Consumers can search for medications online, print a coupon and present it at participating pharmacies to access the discounted price.
Trump has recently negotiated pricing arrangements with major drug manufacturers, securing commitments to what he calls “Most Favored Nation” pricing, aligning US prices with the lowest rates offered in other wealthy countries.
In return, pharmaceutical companies have reportedly received incentives, including relief from tariffs imposed by Trump’s administration on various countries.
