President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to host an IndyCar street race in the heart of the U.S. capital this August.
Dubbed the “Freedom 250,” the event is the latest in a series of high-profile celebrations planned for the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The proposed circuit would see open-wheel racers reaching speeds of 190 mph on Pennsylvania Avenue, passing iconic landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted the historical rarity of the event, remarking that the city hasn’t hosted a race of this scale since a horse race in 1801.

The race is part of a “summer of greatness” envisioned by the president, which also features a UFC fight on the White House lawn scheduled for June 14—coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday.
To accommodate the fight, the administration plans to build a temporary stadium capable of seating over 100,000 spectators.
While Interior Secretary Doug Burgum praised the race as a “metaphor” for the administration’s rapid pace, the project faces significant logistical hurdles.
Federal agencies have just 14 days to finalise the specific route and safety protocols required to transform the historic district into a high-speed racetrack.
