U.S. President Donald Trump issued a bold ultimatum on Saturday, threatening to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to secure the nation’s airports.

The move is a response to an ongoing budget standoff in Congress that has left standard Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel working without pay.

Trump signalled that if a funding agreement is not reached immediately, he will pivot from traditional security protocols to use the enforcement agency as a substitute workforce.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, the President praised the “brilliant and patriotic” nature of ICE agents, suggesting they would bring a level of security “as no one has ever seen before.”

The threat adds a new layer of intensity to the political deadlock over Department of Homeland Security funding, which has already caused significant delays at major travel hubs.

Critics and lawmakers are now weighing the legal and operational implications of replacing specialised airport screeners with immigration enforcement officers.
