U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States carried out an operation on Saturday against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
In a post on his Truth platform, Trump said the operation was conducted “in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement” and that President Maduro and his wife had been “captured and flown out of the country.” He did not provide further operational details.
Trump also announced that a news conference would be held later in the day at Mar-a-Lago, his private residence and club in Florida.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” the statement read.
President Nicolás Maduro has been in power in Venezuela since 2013 and has long been at the centre of tensions between Caracas and Washington, including sanctions, diplomatic standoffs, and past U.S. indictments related to narcotics trafficking allegations, which the Venezuelan government has repeatedly rejected.
