US President Donald Trump suggested renaming the strategic Strait of Hormuz to “Trump Strait” on Wednesday, even as the crucial waterway remains deeply contested amid ongoing military conflict with Iran.
In a post published on his Truth Social platform, Trump touted US dominance in the region to advocate for the name change.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name of the Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump wrote.
Trump’s proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz fits into a broader pattern of using geographical nomenclature to project American power during international disputes.
Trump ordered Lake Ontario renamed “Lake America” last week during a trade dispute with Canada, following his decision on his first day back in office in January 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
Neither Canada nor Mexico has recognised the official name change, though several of Trump’s previous informal suggestions eventually became formal policy.
The rebrand proposal comes as the conflict continues to severely disrupt global energy markets.
Despite Trump’s claims of military dominance, Iranian forces have effectively blocked the critical maritime passage—which normally carries twenty per cent of global oil supplies—in response to military action launched by the US and Israel in late February.
Crude oil prices surged again following recent US airstrikes near the strait targeting alleged Iranian minelaying operations.
