United States President Donald Trump announced that he secured “fantastic trade deals” and resolved numerous bilateral challenges following his high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Despite Trump’s enthusiastic declaration that the meetings established a milestone in global diplomacy, concrete details and official confirmations of these agreements remained notably scarce hours after the summit concluded.

While the American leader utilised warm rhetoric to describe his relationship with Xi, the Chinese delegation maintained a far more muted and reserved posture, leaving several highly anticipated economic and geopolitical announcements unverified.

According to Trump, President Xi verbally committed to key concessions, including assisting in the reopening of the conflict-choked Strait of Hormuz, enforcing a strict non-proliferation stance regarding Iran, and purchasing billions of dollars in American soybeans and oil.

Additionally, Trump claimed to have brokered a massive aviation deal involving the purchase of up to 750 Boeing aircraft.

However, China’s foreign ministry consistently declined to confirm or deny these specific metrics, simply issuing a generalised statement that strategic maritime shipping lanes should be reopened as soon as possible.

The summit also left several critical economic issues unaddressed, with Trump confirming that an extension of the existing one-year tariff truce was never brought up during the discussions.

Furthermore, despite high-profile artificial intelligence executives attending the summit as part of the US delegation, no breakthroughs were reached regarding the relaxation of stringent export controls on advanced semiconductor microchips.

Instead, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that initial discussions merely focused on establishing basic bilateral guardrails for AI technology moving forward.

On the geopolitical front, the meetings opened with a stern warning from President Xi regarding Taiwan, with the Chinese leader cautioning that missteps over the island’s status could inadvertently trigger a direct military conflict.

While Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Washington’s regional policy remains completely unchanged, Trump noted that he simply chose to listen to Xi’s concerns without offering a formal counter-comment.

Financial and political analysts concluded that while the summit successfully established a baseline of constructive strategic stability, the newfound equilibrium remains highly fragile and does little to eliminate underlying structural frictions between the two superpowers.
