Delegations from Hamas, Israel, and the United States are scheduled to meet in Egypt on Monday to discuss a potential truce and the release of captives held in Gaza.
US President Donald Trump is urging negotiators to “move fast” to finalise a deal to end the nearly two-year conflict.
Both Hamas and Israel have responded favourably to Trump’s proposal, which outlines a multi-phase plan starting with the exchange of 47 hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of Palestinian detainees.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised that for the hostage release to happen, Israeli military strikes must stop.
Hamas has set conditions for a deal, insisting that Israel must halt all military operations, cease air and drone activity, and withdraw forces from inside Gaza City before the group will halt its own operations.
The broader US-backed roadmap for the territory calls for a halt to hostilities, a swift hostage release, a gradual Israeli withdrawal, and the disarmament of Hamas.
This plan, which is supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also stipulates that Hamas will have no role in the future governance of Gaza.
