Turkey Bans 147 Club Officials Over Betting Breaches

The Turkish Football Federation has banned 147 current and former club officials for 45 days over violations of betting rules following an investigation into gambling in Turkish football.

The Professional Football Disciplinary Board imposed the sanctions on Tuesday after reviewing the cases of 448 officials referred by the federation over allegations that they placed bets while serving at clubs, Reuters reported.

“The committee found that 147 out of 448 individuals had violated betting rules and imposed 45-day penalties, which bar football officials from carrying out duties within the sport during the suspension period,” Reuters reported.

Those sanctioned included Ertugrul Dogan, president of Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor, according to the committee’s ruling.

However, the board cleared the remaining officials, with Reuters reporting that “the board imposed no penalties in the other 301 cases after finding insufficient grounds for disciplinary action.”

Turkish FA Intensifies Betting Crackdown

The Turkish Football Federation announced in September that it had provisionally suspended 448 current and former club officials who had served at clubs competing in the country’s top two divisions over the previous five years.

“The federation said at the time that those referred had been found to have placed bets while holding club positions,” Reuters reported.

The latest sanctions form part of the federation’s efforts to strengthen oversight of betting activities in Turkish football.

According to Reuters, the TFF has tightened its monitoring of betting since a scandal rocked Turkish football, prompting investigations into alleged violations involving people connected to the sport.

The 45-day suspensions prevent the sanctioned officials from carrying out football-related duties during the penalty period.
