Türkiye Urges Immediate and Lasting Ceasefire in Libya

Türkiye has called for an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Libya following a fresh outbreak of violence between rival armed groups in the capital, Tripoli.

On Wednesday, fierce clashes erupted once again between the Radaa force and the 444 Brigade in several strategic areas of the city. This latest escalation follows days of unrest that have already claimed at least six lives.

In a statement, the Turkish foreign ministry expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation. “We are closely monitoring the escalating situation in and around Tripoli,” the ministry said. “We call on all parties to implement a full and lasting ceasefire without delay and to engage in dialogue to settle disputes.”

Libya has endured years of instability since the NATO-backed uprising in 2011 that led to the overthrow and death of former leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country remains divided, with a UN-recognised government led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah based in Tripoli, while a rival eastern administration remains under the control of the Haftar family.

From April 2019 to June 2020, eastern forces led by Khalifa Haftar launched a military campaign to capture Tripoli, supported by foreign allies including Russia and Egypt. That offensive was eventually repelled by the Tripoli-based government with substantial backing from Türkiye.
