Two boxers, both 28, have died from brain injuries they suffered during separate bouts at the same boxing event in Tokyo on August 2.

The Japan Boxing Commission’s secretary-general noted that this is likely the first time in the country’s history that two fighters from the same card required such serious medical attention.

Shigetoshi Kotari, a super featherweight, lost consciousness after a 12-round draw. His boxing gym announced that he passed away on August 8 from an acute subdural hematoma, despite undergoing surgery and treatment.

The WBO expressed its deepest condolences to the families and the Japanese boxing community, noting the heartbreaking timing of both deaths.
