Two teenage brothers, Miracle Peters (16) and Emma Peters (17), have drowned in floodwaters at Eligbolo community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, following a heavy downpour on Sunday.

The siblings reportedly lost their lives while attempting to rescue a neighbour trapped in the flood. According to their mother, Onyinyechi Peters, the boys had successfully helped the victim to safety but were swept away by strong currents while trying to retrieve a pair of slippers that slipped off.

“They tried to pick the slippers but people were telling them to leave it. The water now carried both of them,” the grieving mother told reporters.

Residents blamed the tragedy on the persistent flooding caused by an overflowing canal along G.U. Ake Road, which has repeatedly submerged homes and businesses in the area. Many appealed to the state government to dredge and expand the canal to prevent further loss of lives and property.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, said, “Two lives were lost yesterday. Let the government come to our aid by deepening the canal so the water can flow properly.”

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as “very pathetic” and extending condolences to the family. She said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The tragic deaths occurred just days after two children drowned in Kano State under similar circumstances, highlighting the growing toll of flood disasters across the country.
