Two Lagos Schools Shut Over Explosion Threat

Avi-Cenna International School and Grange School, both in Lagos, have suspended physical academic activities following an explosion threat.

Avi-Cenna International School announced the closure in a letter signed by Paul Olubajo and sent to parents and guardians. The management said it received a text message warning of a possible explosion.

The school immediately alerted the police, who deployed a special unit to assess the situation. Although officers later confirmed that the premises were safe, the management decided to close the school for the day as a precaution.

The school apologised for the inconvenience and assured parents that the safety of students, staff, and the wider school community remained its top priority.

In a similar move, Grange School announced its closure for Thursday. In a letter signed by the head of school, Richard McMahon, the management said there was no immediate danger but stressed the importance of acting responsibly.

Grange School said it would use the closure period to engage fully with relevant authorities and obtain official guidance. The school confirmed that learning would continue through online classes, with teachers contacting parents directly where lessons were scheduled.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said it had neutralised the threat. In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the police said the response team was led by the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh.

The team included officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit, as well as the Rapid Response Squad.

Police conducted a thorough sweep of the school premises, covering classrooms, offices, halls, and playgrounds. EOD-CBRN experts confirmed that no improvised explosive devices or hazardous materials were present.

However, the police commissioner ordered a full investigation to trace, identify, and arrest those responsible for sending the threat message.
