U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States would oversee the governance of Venezuela until a “safe, proper, and judicious transition” could be arranged.

He made this known during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Saturday.

We are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition. And it has to be judicious because that’s what we’re all about,” he said

This comes after Trump confirmed early hours on Saturday that the United States carried out an operation against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

While speaking at the conference, Trump described the operation as “one of the most stunning, effective, and powerful displays of American military might and competence in American history,” claiming that all Venezuelan military capacities had been neutralised.

“All Venezuelan military capacities were rendered powerless as the men and women of our military, working with U.S. law enforcement, successfully captured Maduro in the dead of night. It was dark. The lights of Caracas were largely turned off due to a certain expertise that we have,” he added.

He compared the mission to previous U.S. operations, including the attack on Qassem Soleimani , and a strike on Iranian nuclear sites in Operation Midnight Hammer, stating that, “no nation in the world could achieve what America achieved yesterday, or frankly, in just a short period of time.”

Trump stressed that both Maduro and his wife would face American justice, adding that the move was intended to ensure peace, liberty, and justice for Venezuelans, including those living in the U.S. who wish to return.

“We want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela, and that includes many from Venezuela that are now living in the United States and want to go back to their country. It’s their homeland.”
