The United Kingdom has announced an additional £5 million ($6.57 million) in humanitarian aid for Sudan following what officials described as “truly horrifying” reports of atrocities carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their recent capture of El-Fasher.

The RSF, which has been engaged in a brutal conflict with Sudan’s army since April 2023, seized control of El-Fasher last Sunday — the army’s final stronghold in the western Darfur region. The city’s fall came after an 18-month siege marked by relentless bombardments, starvation, and severe humanitarian suffering.

During a conference in Bahrain, UK Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper said the conflict in Sudan had been neglected for far too long, allowing the suffering of civilians to worsen. She described recent reports from Darfur as “truly horrifying.”

“The reports from Darfur in recent days are truly horrifying,” said Cooper.

“Atrocities, mass executions, starvation, and the devastating use of rape as a weapon of war, with women and children bearing the brunt of the largest humanitarian crisis in the 21st century.”

“UK diplomats continue to push all parties to cease hostilities to protect civilians, to allow unhindered humanitarian access,” the Foreign Office said in a press release.
