British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Saturday that the UK is sending fighter jets and other military resources to the Middle East in response to escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel.
“We are moving assets to the region, including jets, and that is for contingency support,” Starmer told journalists accompanying him en route to the G7 summit in Canada. He confirmed that he had held talks with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Israel’s Friday strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities.
The Israeli attacks have killed dozens, including senior military and Revolutionary Guards figures, along with civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched a wave of drone and missile attacks against Israel overnight.

Starmer described the situation as “fast-moving” and “intense,” emphasising the need for diplomacy. “We’re having ongoing discussions with our allies all the time,” he said, noting that Foreign Secretary David Lammy had also engaged in talks with Iranian officials.
“Our constant message is de-escalate,” the Prime Minister added. “Everything we’re doing, all discussions we’re having are to do with de-escalation.”
Starmer called his conversation with Netanyahu on Friday “good and constructive,” saying it included talks on Israel’s safety and regional stability.
Foreign Secretary Lammy also expressed deep concern over the latest violence. Posting on social media, he said: “We must urgently de-escalate & prevent any further harm to civilians,” adding that he had spoken with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to press for calm.
