British rapper Ghetts was on Tuesday sentenced by a London court to 12 years’ imprisonment for killing a student while speeding and driving over the legal alcohol limit.

The award-winning grime artist, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, failed to stop after his BMW struck Nepalese national Yubin Tamang, 20, in north-east London last October. The 41-year-old defendant admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

During sentencing at Old Bailey, Judge Mark Lucraft imposed a 12-year custodial sentence and disqualified him from driving for 17 years.

He told Clarke-Samuel that CCTV footage revealed a “quite appalling litany of incidents” leading up to the fatal crash, which he described as “simply shocking”.

The judge acknowledged the father-of-two’s “genuine remorse” and the letters of support submitted on his behalf, including one from his partner outlining how he had used his music career to make a positive contribution to his community.

Ghetts, who has collaborated with Ed Sheeran and won Best Male Act at the MOBO Awards in 2021, was reported to have been one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit prior to the collision.

The court heard that he drove through six red traffic lights, repeatedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road and travelled at more than twice the speed limit in a 30mph (48km/h) zone before his vehicle struck Tamang as he was crossing the street.

Clarke-Samuel did not contact emergency services, and Tamang died in the hospital two days later as a result of his injuries.

The defendant had 12 previous convictions for 27 offences dating back to the age of 16, including robbery, aggravated vehicle taking and motoring offences.

Sharmila Tamang, the victim’s mother, broke down in tears as she read a statement in court about her only child.
