A policewoman has been killed and at least 15 others injured following overnight explosions in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, in what authorities have described as a suspected terror attack.

According to the Lviv regional prosecutor’s office, the blasts occurred shortly after police responded to a reported break-in at a shop in the city centre around 12:30 a.m.

A first explosion went off as officers arrived at the scene, while a second followed moments later when another patrol team got there.

Officials confirmed that a 23-year-old female officer lost her life in the incident, which also damaged a patrol vehicle and a civilian car.

Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovy described the incident as a deliberate act of terror, noting that 15 people were receiving medical treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition. He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer.

“This is definitely an act of terror,” Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovy said in a Facebook post. “We have 15 people currently receiving medical aid, some of them are in very serious condition.

“One policewoman died. My condolences to the family and close ones,” he added.

Lviv, located near the Polish border and far from active front lines, has experienced occasional strikes and security incidents since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, though deadly explosions in its city centre remain uncommon.
