Ukrainian forces carried out a drone attack on southern Russia overnight, igniting a fire at an oil refinery, regional authorities reported Monday. The attack came as Moscow unleashed nearly 200 drones on Ukrainian territory.
The strike on an oil refinery in Russia’s Astrakhan region was the latest in a series of aerial assaults by both sides, increasingly targeting energy infrastructure.
Regional governor Igor Babushkin stated that staff at the “fuel and energy” facility were evacuated before the strike, which resulted in a massive fire.
“One person was wounded during the attack. The victim has now been taken to the hospital,” Babushkin wrote on social media.
The exchange of drone attacks occurred as Ukraine condemned Russia for rejecting a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire that would have had no preconditions.
Meanwhile, Moscow launched its own large-scale offensive, deploying 174 drones against Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that air defence systems successfully intercepted 90 drones, including the Iranian-designed Shahed models.
In Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, around 500 people lost power due to the strikes. One person was injured, and multiple buildings, including a preschool, sustained damage, according to regional governor Oleg Kiper.
