The United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) reported Monday that approximately 300,000 South Sudanese have fled the country in 2025 due to escalating conflict and ethnic violence.
The UNCHR stated that armed clashes are occurring “on a scale not seen since a cessation of hostilities was signed in 2017,” with civilians, especially women, bearing the brunt of displacement and human rights violations.

The crisis follows the recent suspension and long-term unravelling of the fragile power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar.
Commission chairman Yasmin Sooka placed blame squarely on South Sudan’s leaders, criticising their “deliberate choices” for prioritising personal interests over the welfare of their people.
