The United Nations peacekeeping chief, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has urged Israel to withdraw its forces from the demilitarised Golan Heights, warning that their presence is obstructing UN operations and violating a long-standing peace agreement.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Lacroix highlighted the difficulties faced by the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in carrying out its mandate due to Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) activities in the area of separation.
The Israeli army’s presence “has made it difficult and challenging for them (UNDOF) to implement their mandated activities,” Lacroix stated, calling it a clear violation of the 1974 agreement between Israel and Syria.
He noted that Israel has assured the UN that its presence in the Golan Heights is temporary, but stressed that withdrawal should happen as soon as possible to restore compliance with international agreements.
Lacroix also raised concerns about the safety and well-being of residents in the area, stating that UNDOF had received complaints from locals about security risks. He urged all parties to prioritise the protection of civilians and their property.
