Namibia’s President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has called for global unity in tackling pressing issues such as desertification, youth unemployment, and economic inequality in her address to the 2025 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday.
She emphasised that a robust international convention is necessary to combat desertification, underscoring the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
“We must declare a strong united nation convention to combat desertification, for the preservation of our land,” she said, emphasising the growing urgency to protect the planet from the effects of environmental harm.
While acknowledging technological advances, Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that AI should not replace human judgment or responsibility, advocating for global standards that ensure fairness and transparency in its use.

“While we celebrate technological advancements, ethical boundaries must be respected,” the President stated, adding that AI should never replace human judgment or responsibility. She called for a global standard to ensure AI usage remains transparent, fair, and in the service of humanity.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah also reflected on the ongoing struggles faced by nations, including the lack of access to housing, quality education, and healthcare. She emphasised that these challenges require multilateral solutions, saying that no country can tackle them alone.
“These are challenges that no one country can address alone,” she declared, urging the international community to work together in facing these common struggles.
Celebrating gender equality, she proudly shared that Namibia’s cabinet is now 57% women and announced plans to host two major events marking the anniversaries of the Beijing Declaration and UN Security Council Resolution 1325. “Together, we must work to make the world a better place,” she said, calling for continued global commitment to women’s rights, peace, and security.
