The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, has announced an indefinite strike due to the delayed payment of March 2026 salaries and outstanding allowances.

The branch chairperson, Jurbe Molwus, announced this decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, April 8. The union instructed all its members to withdraw their services, including lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings wth immediate effect.

The statement says, “After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, the conduct of exams, and statutory meetings, as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience.”

Following settlements agreed by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) and the local branch congress, the strike takes effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

According to the union, the action was necessary after months of patience and repeated salary payment delays. ASUU stated that its members had continued to work despite the challenges, but could no longer maintain normal academic activities without being paid.

The union Chairperson stated that the delay in salary payments was caused by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, noting that the university’s bursary department completed its part of the payment process, so the delay wasn’t within its control.

The union also warned that continued payment delays could disrupt ‘industrial harmony’ within the university. They stressed that their members’ patience shouldn’t be taken for granted, because they play an important role in maintaining academic stability.

To ensure compliance with the directive, ASUU stated its strike monitoring team would be activated to oversee compliance with the strike across all university departments.

However, the development is likely to affect academic activities at the University of Jos, as students may experience interruptions in lectures, examinations, and other academic engagements.
