Eintracht Frankfurt’s struggles deepened on Sunday as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened Union Berlin, with Hugo Ekitike missing a stoppage time penalty.
Frankfurt had initially taken the lead through Michy Batshuayi’s first goal for the club in the 13th minute.
However, Union levelled in the second half through Leopold Querfeld’s header and then took the lead when Jeong Woo-Yeong scored on the counter.
Late drama ensued when VAR awarded Frankfurt a penalty after a handball by Union’s Danilho Doekhi in stoppage time.
Ekitike’s low shot was saved by Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, who made his third penalty save of the season, securing a crucial win for the visitors.
Frankfurt have now lost three consecutive league games and have only won two of their last eight since the January departure of Omar Marmoush.
