UNRWA Accuses Israel of Starving Gazans

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has once again levelled serious accusations against Israel, claiming it is using starvation as a weapon of war against the civilian population of Gaza, including over one million children.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, UNRWA said, “The Israeli authorities are starving civilians in Gaza. Among them are 1 million children.”

The agency renewed its appeal for the blockade to be lifted, stating, “Lift the siege: allow UNRWA to bring in food and medicines.”

Despite international obligations to safeguard civilians and ensure humanitarian access during conflict, Israel has enforced a total siege on the Gaza Strip since March 2.

Humanitarian organisations report that border crossings remain closed, aid convoys are frequently bombed, and distribution points are targeted—actions widely condemned as collective punishment and possibly constituting war crimes.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Sunday that 86 Palestinians, including 76 children, have died due to hunger and malnutrition since the beginning of the war.

It described the ongoing crisis as a “silent massacre,” with 18 deaths from starvation recorded in the last 24 hours alone.

The ministry laid blame on both Israeli authorities and the international community, calling for the immediate reopening of border crossings to allow critical aid to enter.

Palestinian sources reported that at least 136 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Saturday, including 38 who had been waiting for food aid. Three of the dead were children who succumbed to severe malnutrition.

Since the outbreak of war in October 2023, nearly 59,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with the majority being women and children.

The Israeli bombardment has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, pushed its health system to the brink of collapse, and created famine-like conditions across the territory.

In November last year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Separately, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in Gaza.
